Ichiro’s Malt Mizunara Wood Reserve 109

Ichiro’s Malt is a series of whiskys which are not necessarily distilled at Chichibu, but which are selected and blended by master distiller Ichiro Akuto. Mizunara Wood Reserve is composed of distillates from both Chichibu and the closed cult distillery, Hanyu. The icing on the cake is the finish on the barrel of Japanese oak, mizunara, which is both difficult to work with, difficult to obtain and extremely expensive. But it’s worth the effort: Ichiro has stated that it is his preferred cask type because of the unique flavors the Japanese oak imparts to the whisky.

Tasting notes:

Nose: Charming scent of coconut, cloves, incense and peach.

Palate: Full-bodied, both sweet and a little ”spicy”, with notes of warm baked goods, coconut again and stone fruit.
